Morgan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goldman Sachs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deutsche Bank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the attacks, however, companies and workers began relocating to diversify risk, shifting operations to London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.<br>As a result, the number of Japanese financial professionals based in the U.S. began to decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the early 2000s still saw strong enthusiasm for study-abroad programs\u2014\u201cthe last era when many young Japanese still saw real opportunity in America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-vk-heading-solid_black\">\ud83e\udded The Lehman Shock and the Structural Shift in Hiring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, the collapse of Lehman Brothers triggered a global financial crisis.<br>The U.S. economy plunged into recession, and unemployment soared to over 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Obama administration responded by prioritizing <strong>\u201cprotecting American jobs.\u201d<\/strong> This led to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stricter scrutiny of H-1B visa applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased filing fees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surprise workplace inspections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under these changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most H-1B slots were taken by Indian and Chinese engineers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Japanese professional hires dropped sharply<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many Japanese students were unable to secure work visas and had to return to Japan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This period marked the beginning of a structural decline in \u201cJapanese workers in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-vk-heading-solid_black\">\ud83d\udcc9 Fewer Young Japanese, Growing Senior Population<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the 1990s, U.S. wages and prices have risen roughly 2.5 times, while the average Japanese income has remained largely flat.<br>This income gap has caused many families to give up on overseas study, leading to a <strong>visible decline in young Japanese coming to the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" https:\/\/iiicareer.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/pic2.jpg 2028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to the 2020 U.S. Census:\u3000<br><strong>49.1% of Japanese residents in the U.S. are aged 60 or older<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img https:\/\/iiicareer.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/pic3.jpg 1908w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Meaning:<br><strong>Less than half are of working age.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his lecture, Fujihara illustrated this reality with a memorable metaphor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if you cast a fishing line into the pond, there are no fish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was not poetic exaggeration but a reflection of a structural demographic decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-vk-heading-solid_black\">\ud83c\udf2a\ufe0f COVID-19 Accelerated the \u201cDisappearance\u201d of Japanese Workers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as the labor market began recovering from the Lehman Shock, the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industries dependent on human interaction\u2014tourism, travel, aviation, hospitality, and weddings\u2014collapsed almost overnight.<br>The national unemployment rate skyrocketed from near-full employment to <strong>over 14% within weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compounding the issue, holders of temporary work visas were <strong>ineligible for unemployment benefits<\/strong>, forcing many Japanese workers to return to Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dramatically reduced the supply of Japanese labor in the U.S.<br>The pandemic forced Japanese companies to rethink a fundamental question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHow do we secure and retain talent?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-vk-heading-solid_black\">\ud83e\udde9 Bilingual Japanese\/English Talent Is Now \u201cEndangered\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking these long-term shifts into account, Fujihara issued a clear warning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHiring Japanese\u2013English bilingual talent in the U.S. will soon become as difficult as in European countries, where the Japanese population is small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The era of <strong>\u201cfinding Japanese speakers\u201d is over<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have entered an era of <strong>\u201cdeveloping and maximizing the limited talent that exists\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the irreversible decline and aging of the Japanese population in the U.S., companies must fundamentally rethink how they hire, train, and retain talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-vk-heading-solid_black\">\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f Bringing Voices From the Field to Policymakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u2014 Petitions to the U.S. Ambassador to Japan and the President<\/strong> <strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the urgency, Fujihara submitted formal petitions in <strong>2018 and again in 2024<\/strong> to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The U.S. Ambassador to Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The President of the United States<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal was simple:<br><strong>Ensure policymakers understand the real challenges facing Japanese and bilingual workers in the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petitions called for improvements in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visa programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workforce mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Youth and student pathways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a company involved in recruiting and supporting bilingual professionals, we believe it is our responsibility to <strong>connect real hiring challenges to policy-level discussions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These efforts represent a concrete first step toward rebuilding an environment where young Japanese can once again envision a future in the United
