Chicago Enacts New Paid Sick Leave & Paid Leave Ordinance
Effective December 31, 2023, the new Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance will replace the current Chicago Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. Under the new ordinance, employees will be entitled to 40 hours of paid sick leave and 40 hours of paid leave per year. The new ordinance applies to 1) all employers with employees in Illinois and 2) covers employees who, in any two-week period, perform at least two hours of work while physically present within the geographic boundaries of Chicago.
In addition, as of 1/1/2024 the state of Illinois’ Paid Leave for All Workers Act will be effective. Employers with locations in Chicago and/or Illinois must determine if they must comply with one or both of these laws.
